The Beginning of the Story

Couple of months ago I met a person who ask me if I was "the one that's been around a really long time". In context of handmade jewelry. I remember I choked and didn't know what to answer. And then I got a mail from Jordan from Invaluable.com to write a story about a piece of jewelry that has significant value to me. And yes, that triggered a flashback and I'm taking you all with me on this.

Through out the time there's been many jewelry pieces that had a certain effect on me - either teaching me about composition, colors or techniques and also inspiring me. But the most influential piece of jewelry was a beaded necklace from Czech. My memory of it has faded a bit but I still remember that it had red and dark blue (almost black) pressed glass hearts and 4mm round red beads. The red was in the most beautiful opaque color. I'm looking for this color every time I shop for beads, and the closest color is Czech color 93200. But when I compare the two - the beads from the Czech necklace and new ones - there's no match for the old beads! I wish I could travel back in time and take a photo of the necklace! Because the end of that necklace was really a beginning.

When I was a kid I made rings out of wires from old TVs and such that had colorful plastic coatings. But I didn't dare even to dream about glass beads... So once numerous times I was "rearranging" my mothers jewelry box and there were two similar necklaces, my mother told me I could take the broken one and make something out of it. Anything I want. And that was the moment. That was the beginning of my jewelry story.
***
This is my very first necklace (around 1996) on the left. Before that I made only bracelets, single rows and so-called "slave bracelets". Round red beads are from that Czech necklace I wrote about. You could probably imagine that after the first Czech necklace I wanted more beads. So time after time I could possess more necklaces from my mothers jewelry box. Rather primitive jewelry on the left is all made of Czech beads from that origin. On the right there are some samples of different beading techniques I so eagerly invented because there was nowhere to learn. Only technique here that I learned from web is on the top right - African Helix - that is weaved so thread passes every bead only once. That was probably in 1997-98 when the instructions start to emerge on the web. Beads on the left were from sewing supply stores.
 ***
This is an unfinished lariat in herringbone/ndebele technique that became my favorite. I remember there were no bead-shops in Estonia that time so I made my purchases from Czech, UK and US. That was so exiting times! I was able to use Czech glass beads in any color and shape! There was supposed to be two of those big beaded beads on both ends of the lariat but the second bead is still unfinished and that's why I can show you this as something to represent my next step in my jewelry story.
***
In the beginning of the 2000's I saw the possibilities of wire. By that time there were also some books available to learn from. I started with simple wire bending and looping and ended up with wire wrapping technique. As you can see I tried different color wires: brass, gold plated, silver plated, sterling silver and antique copper. I also used black colored wire and sometimes used red and green :) I also tried different beads - semiprecious stones, natural pearls, handmade beads, Swarovski crystal and metal beads along with Czech glass beads. I opened mdmButiik shop at DaWanda in 2007 and tried my hand in selling jewelry. That was also the year I started this blog.
***
By the 2009 I had already fallen for the rhinestones. I used them with wire wrapping, embroidery and also attempted soldering. That was the time I discovered the vintage glass stones! And that some of them were out of production. I realized how much I enjoy the hunt and how inspiring they are to me... Old glass components were thrilling and from there I started to take the aim for vintage look. 2009 was the establishing year of company mdmButiik.
***
Here are some examples of jewelry where I started to combine the rhinestones with stamped filigree plates. I had already started to contact the manufacturers and wholesalers for components I couldn't get from stores or I was using in such a big amount. As you can see antique copper colored components have taken over. It was a bit scary to choose this as my metal, because I heard people say that this doesn't go well with engagement/wedding rings (and it might be true) and I knew the selection of the components was truly small compared to silver or gold plated. So my choice was nothing else but purely holding on to what inspires me. In 2010 I opened mdmButiik shop at Etsy.
 ***

And these are the examples of jewelry I make at present time. Czech glass beads are something that I can't design without. Although I don't turn up my nose at beads from other origin. I love pearls! And yes, I'm still into rhinestones. I've stayed true to antique copper even though this hasn't been my plan. I don't like the idea of setting myself boundaries no matter if it's about the materials I use or the style I try to achieve. I want to follow my inspiration.

A Moveable Feast. Art Deco Fashion Design from Alexandre Vassiliev's Collection

I remember when I saw the add for this exhibition, my thought was that this is something I really would like to see. But I actually forgot about it. Fortunately Hedvig reminded me. Thanks!
This exhibition is based on the collection of Art Deco clothing and accessories of Alexandre Vassiliev. It is open 11.10.2014–18.01.2015 so it was a close call. And this was the rarest occasion when I unexpectedly turned up on the day when the ticket was only 1 euros.

to see and I wasn't disappointed)

silver-lined seed-beads or black seed-beads. But I also recognized
blown imitation pearls that I didn't expect (I've only read about them)
and nailhead beads that were described as
coral beads in some strange reason (the rim from pressing glass was visible)

Embroiderings, fringes and tassels - Fabulous!

The color called Teal

As Maarit wrote on her blog, it is difficult to find a perfect word for "teal" in Estonian. I've wanted to have these beads for a long time, more than 6 months (what can I say, I'm patient). The mysterious glow that is created by silver foil and frosted surface finish has charmed me before. I had the idea to combine these with fuchsia colored beads (I was planning to be bold). But, as it has happened before, things changed. I changed my mind. The teal colored beads arrived the same day as the vintage Japan handmade beads. I couldn't ignore the way the colors collaborated.

I'm not going to tell you yet what was the color of the vintage beads. Soon I'll show it photos. Only thing I can add is that I'm pretty sure I would have never thought to use this color combination on my own.

Re-Organizing vol2

Niisiis - kus hoida valmis ehteid?

So - where to storage jewellery items? Not my personal but the mdmButiik jewellery ;) I bet I'm not the only one who spends time on the net admiring the apothecary or index filing cabinets with all those tiny little drawers with label holders and all. Aren't these adorable?
... and expensive.

Anyway, since wooden drawers is something I simply can't afford (not even a second hand one) I needed to desert my glimmering dreams and aim much lower. Plywood will do just fine, right? I just needed to separate the jewellery so it wouldn't tangle (I hate that) and let me have some sort of overview. So any drawers will do. And the surface doesn't need to be silky smooth, I just hope I don't get (much) splinters, right? And raw plywood can always look better when doing some DIY with sanding and covering with paint. So, you can see the result on the photos.

Re-Organizing vol.1

Olen pikalt pead murdnud, kuidas saaks kogu oma "pärlimajandusest" paremat ülevaadet. Klaashelmed on kummutis, kus sahtli esipaneel kõrge, küljed madalad (teate ju küll!), kristall-klaasist helmed koos ehtekividega metall-kapis, pool-vääriskividest helmed "tornides", käsitsi tehtud helmed kummutisse enam ei mahu ning klaaspärlitel polegi nagu kohta olnudki... Ahjaa, ja seemne-helmed ka veel. Sama asi ehetega.

I've been wondering about how to get a (better) overview of my beading stash. Glass beads are in dresser drawers, where the panel of a drawer is high and sides low (don't you hate that!), crystal glass beads are in metal cabinet along with rhinestones, semi-precious stones are in little "tower" cabinet, handmade beads don't fit anywhere anymore and glass pearls didn't have a place at all... Oh yes, seed beads too. Same thing with jewellery. It's not the rarest case when I sell a pair of earrings and I just can't find it! At least not before I've made another pair...

I HAD TO do something about it. I always thought that an architect drawers will pull it off. Lots of shallow drawers give opportunity to put beads in mini-grip bags side-by-side and enable me to see easily what's in it. I got one elderly second-hand cabinet made in Finland. Obviously served a long time - there's a mark of a flower pot that's been watered too often. First label holders off and a bit of sanding. And then I painted it white.

This drawer contains all of my glass beads, imitation pearls, semi-precious beads, crystal glass beads (Swarovski, Preciosa), handmade beads, vintage beads and seed-beads. I have an idea of what to do with organizing my jewellery. I already bought some necessary materials, some are on their way and sanding-painting to be done...

Vintage Rhinestone Package

Eelmine nädal jõudis Eestisse üks vana ehtekivide pakike, millele sain kätte eile. Müüja kirjelduse kohaselt peaks olema tegu vanade Swarovski kividega. Kvaliteet on tõesti hea, ent kuskilt ei leidnud mingit märget, et tegu oleks Swarovski toodanguga. Pakil on üleval servas kirjas "IMIT.DOUBLETS EXTRA step cut FOILED RUBY 4.2/5MM" ja lõpp on käsitsi üle kirjutatud, veel "AUG 6 1946". All vasakus nurgas "GRO 4", mis tähendab kogust (4grossi=4x144=576tk) ning paremas nurgas numbrid "3629". Teisel pool on edasimüüja andmed "Hoffer-Ashley, inc.", mis võib ollagi üks suurim ehtekivide edasimüüja, mis kannab tänapäeval nime E.H. Ashley & Co, inc (asutatud 1899).

Last week a vintage rhinestone package came to Estonia, I received it yesterday. The man who sold it described it as vintage Swarovski. The quality is stunning though I couldn't find anything on the package to confirm it was Swarovski. On the edge of the envelope there is a writing "IMIT.DOUBLETS EXTRA step cut FOILED RUBY 4.2/5MM" and last part is over written by hand, and also "AUG 6 1946". Left corner has "GRO 4" meaning the amount of stones in this package (4grosses=4x144=576pcs) and right corner numbers "3629". On the back of the package there's info about the wholesaler "Hoffer-Ashley, inc" that could be one of the biggest rhinestone reseller that carries a name E.H. Ashley & Co, inc nowadays (it was founded in 1899). And four city names New York, Paris, Oberstein and Gablonz. Since the last one is written in bigger font then perhaps these stones were made in Czechslovakia.

Rhinestones are carefully wrapped in cotton, tissue paper and strong brown paper. These are ruby red, cut into shield shape and folium is almost perfect. I have a feeling I'm not going to get matching settings for those...

Saturday at Vintage Tallinn

Yesterday, on Saturday I took part of Vintage Tallinn. I was so nervous I kept talking all 6 hours. About my jewellery and rhinestones ofcourse. I even took 3 vintage rhinestone packages with me to show. Yesterday was the first time for me to use a payment terminal from my bank and didn't know how to use it first. Right next to my selling spot was Mona jewellery and Elena there helped me with it.

Briefly said, it was a positive experience. Tiresome, but thiskind of things tend to be that way. It was nice to hear compliments on my jewellery and when looking at sales I did OK. I can now pay for the order of rhinestone settings that I really needed already in the beginning of this month.

Thank you all who visited and came to have a chat!

New attempt

Laadisin fotoka aku, paigutasin valge paberi ja kõrvarõngad aknalauale ning jäin varitsema kõige heledamat hetke. Pildid tehtud päevavalguses (päike pilve taga), kuna statiivi pole, siis kasutasin plastkarbikest ning tegin pisut heledamaks pilditöötlusega (whitepoint, gamma, contrast).

Aga tegelikult on need kõrvarõngad suht väikesed, diameeter 1,8cm.

I recharged my camera battery, arranged the set with white paper and earrings and waited for the brightest moment. These photos were made in daylight (sun behind the clouds), since I don't have a tripod I used small plastic box to support the camera and made them a bit brighter on computer (whitepoint, gamma, contrast).

Actually these earrings are quite small, 1,8cm in diameter.

White beads...

Siin on ühed vanad helmed, mille ostsin mõned aastad tagasi ja jäid seisma. Pärit Jaapanist, piimjasvalged. Isu tuli teha mitmerealine kee, kaunistatud karpkinnisega. Mul on kaks niiti kristallklaasist suuri oliivrohelisi helmeid ka. Need on tihedate lihvitud tahkudega. Oliivroheline ja valge... Ehk hakkab miskit looma.

These are vintage glass beads that I purchased some years ago. Made in Japan, milky white. I think I want to make a festive necklace with many strings of beads and a box clasp. I also have two strings of large crystal glass olive green beads. With micro faceting. Olive green and white... Perhaps it leads somewnere.
